Active Governance (DS)
Trend documented by Supernova early 2026: shift from passive DS governance (committee validates a few PRs/month) to active (automatic compliance instrumentation, real-time alerts, dashboarded DS KPIs, measured adoption metrics). Active = continuous, measurable, automated. Opposite of costly yearly audits already obsolete. Combines drift detection, trust-levels, glass-box AI, and usage reporting into an operational system.
Strengths
- Measurable: adoption rate, violations, drift are KPIs defensible to management
- Reactive: detects issues in hours instead of months, fixable before they entrench
- Aligns DS and business: DS KPIs become visible in product portfolio reviews
Limitations
- Heavy investment (instrumentation + dashboards + alerts), not for a beginner DS
- KPI fatigue risk: too many metrics and teams ignore them, becoming passive again
Best for
- Enterprise design system (100+ devs, 5+ products) where passive governance no longer holds
- Design system manager wanting to be perceived as operator, not internal consultant
