Agent vs Chat
A chat answers a question. An agent executes a multi-step plan, uses tools, reads files, writes code, and self-corrects. Claude Code is an agent, Claude.ai is a chat. In between sits the workflow: the AI follows steps written in advance, whereas an agent decides for itself the next action and which tool to use. Anthropic draws the same line: predefined code paths on one side, a model directing its own work on the other.
Strengths
- Agents can accomplish in minutes tasks that would take hours manually
- The four-level ladder provides a progression grid, not just a conceptual binary
Limitations
- A poorly guided agent can delete files, break code, or consume many tokens
