Black-Box AI Drift
Anti-pattern documented by Stack Overflow blog (April 2026): silent drift caused by AI agents shipping code without surfacing their decisions. The agent chooses a color, a padding, a component, but doesn't explain why. Across 100 PRs, you accumulate 100 invisible micro-decisions that compound into brand drift, consistency debt, and team knowledge loss. Opposite of `glass-box-ai`.
Strengths
- Vocabulary making an invisible problem visible, precious for defending review budget
- Symmetric with glass-box-ai, the pair offers a complete conceptual frame to discuss AI + DS
Limitations
- Critical concept alone: without glass-box-ai pattern as alternative, may sound anti-AI
Best for
- Design system manager defending human review on AI PRs to 'all-AI' management
- Team seeing DS consistency erode PR after PR without single identifiable cause
