Anthropic's essay published on 19 December 2024: the line between workflow and agent, then five workflow patterns (prompt chaining, routing, parallelization, orchestrator and workers, evaluator and optimizer).
Resource: Building Effective Agents A workflow follows a path written in advance in code; an agent picks its own steps and tools. Before reading on, take your next agent project and ask which of the five patterns it really is. Stop when you can say, for your case, why a fixed sequence would not be enough. If you cannot, it is a workflow.
