dumbtv
Open source repository (scripts and docs under the MIT licence, device catalogue under CC BY-SA 4.0) that cleans up a Fire TV, or an Android TV, over ADB with no root. Five shell scripts do the work: preflight.sh identifies the TV and shows the planned changes without modifying anything, configure.sh asks a few questions, all.sh runs the steps asking for confirmation at each one (the TV reboots twice), verify.sh checks the result and restore.sh undoes everything. A DNS filter running on the TV blocks about 400 Amazon telemetry, ad and update domains.
Strengths
- No-op preflight, confirmation at each step and restore.sh: you see before you touch, and you can go back
- Nothing written to /system, no root
- Catalogue of 18 tested Fire TV models
Limitations
- Samsung, LG and Roku are not covered, and YouTube ads stay out of reach of a DNS filter
- The DNS filter also blocks functional Fire OS updates while it runs
- A factory reset erases every change
Best for
- Cleaning ads and Amazon telemetry off a Fire TV while staying in control at each step
