Gitingest
Turns a GitHub repo into a single text ready to paste into an assistant: the project summary, its file tree and the content of every file, with the size and token count. The move shown in the reel: in a repo URL, replace "hub" with "ingest" (github.com becomes gitingest.com). The same tool exists as a command line (`pip install gitingest`), a Python package and a Chrome or Firefox extension.
Strengths
- A single text with summary, file tree and file contents: nothing to assemble by hand
- The token counter tells you whether the text fits the context window before you paste
- Three ways to run it: change the URL, the command line, or the browser extension
Limitations
- A big repo exceeds the context window: you have to target a folder or exclude files
- It copies everything, committed secrets included: read the text before giving it to a model
- A private repo needs a GitHub token, so one more third-party site to trust
Best for
- PM or designer taking over an unknown project who wants Claude to explain it before asking the team
- Developer evaluating an open source repo before adopting it
