HeroUI
A React component library (formerly NextUI) built on React Aria for accessibility and Tailwind CSS v4 for styling. Unlike shadcn/ui, you do not pull the component code into your repository: you install a package (`@heroui/react`) and call components whose defaults are already polished. Apache 2.0 licence, around 31,000 stars on GitHub, and documentation served to agents (an llms.txt file and an MCP server).
Strengths
- Polished output with no theme setup: you import it and it renders cleanly
- Accessibility carried by React Aria (keyboard, focus, screen readers) rather than hand-written
- Documentation your agent can read: an llms.txt file and an MCP server
Limitations
- The code lives in a package, not in your repository: a need outside the API gets worked around instead of edited
- Requires Tailwind CSS v4: on a project still on v3, the migration comes first
Best for
- An internal tool or dashboard that has to look finished with no designer
- A React prototype you want to show this week, without tuning a theme
