NotebookLM
Google research/synthesis tool: upload sources (PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube videos), Gemini indexes them with RAG, then chat with them. Also generates audio overviews (generated podcasts) and mind maps. Renamed Gemini Notebook by Google on 16 July 2026: same product, existing links redirect.
Strengths
- Native RAG on up to 50 sources/notebook (300 sources/notebook on paid)
- Direct citations in answers, each claim points to the exact source
- Audio Overviews generates a 10-min 2-voice podcast on your docs, incredible for reviewing while walking
- Generous free tier with no visible token limits
Limitations
- Google vendor lock-in, notebooks live at Google
- No official API: notebooklm-py, an unofficial library, gives Claude Code a command line to create notebooks and generate outputs, but it runs on undocumented Google APIs that can break without notice
- Limited to explicitly uploaded sources, no web scraping
Best for
- DesignOps/PM wanting to synthesize user research (transcripts, surveys, docs)
- Preparing training: upload a product's docs and generate audio + summaries
- Due diligence on a subject: 30 articles in, 1 chat assistant out
